Not long ago, I shared a post that challenged aspiring leaders to examine why they want to lead. The response was immediate.
One comment in particular stood out: “LaSandra, what you said about responsibility vs. personal ambitions… that’s exactly the difference that matters most.”
I couldn’t agree more. Because that difference between leading for responsibility and leading for ambition makes or breaks not just careers, but entire teams.
When Ambition Leads, People Follow at a Distance
Let me be clear: ambition isn’t the enemy. As a woman who has climbed the corporate ladder, built a business, and coached leaders at every level ambition has played a role in my journey.
But here’s what I’ve learned: when your personal ambition becomes greater than your responsibility to develop others, the foundation of your leadership starts to crack.
That’s when the culture shifts from collaborative to competitive. That’s when morale dips, trust erodes, and turnover begins. That’s when chaos sets in.
Why? Because people can feel when your leadership is more about you than them.
Leadership Is Stewardship, Not Self-Promotion
Leadership is not about monitoring performance or climbing higher just for the sake of a title. It’s about stewarding the potential of those entrusted to your influence.
You are shaping lives. You are modeling behavior. You are influencing decisions that ripple beyond the moment.
And if your leadership is built on the premise of “how fast can I get ahead?” rather than “how well can I help others grow?” you may gain the title, but you’ll lose the team.
What Happens When Career Goals Supersede People?
When personal ambition eclipses the growth of others and the mission of the team:
- Collaboration turns into competition. Team members feel the need to “prove” instead of “perform.” Trust is lost.

- Feedback becomes threatening. When leaders are focused on how things make them look; they stop receiving input and start resisting it.

- The team stops growing. No one thrives in a culture where development isn’t a priority.

This isn’t theory. It’s what I’ve seen and helped leaders repair time and time again.
What Should Ambition Look Like in Leadership?
Ambition aligned with responsibility produces powerful, people-centered leadership. That kind of ambition:
- Drives a vision that’s bigger than self
- Creates opportunities for others to rise
- Uses influence to advocate, not dominate
- Leaves a legacy of trust, growth, and impact
The truth is, you can be wildly successful and still lead with humility. You can desire promotion and still build people up. But it requires intention. And integrity.
Ask Yourself…

If you’re currently leading or preparing to:
- Why do I want this role?
- Am I more focused on the outcome or the opportunity to serve?
- How are the people around me growing because of my leadership?
Because leadership will either develop people or damage them. There is no neutral ground.
Final Thought: Be the Leader That Elevates
True leadership multiplies. It leaves people better, stronger, and more confident than they were before you led them.
It’s not about your title, your corner office, or your LinkedIn headline. It’s about how you make people feel, grow, and thrive under your leadership.
So, as you set your sights on the next level don’t lose sight of the people on your team.
Because in the end, no title can replace the impact of a leader who elevated others on the way up.
